The brief:

Europcar, the European leader in car rental, wanted an effective and engaging way to help customers with journey planning at rental points and to increase take-up of special offers from local Europcar partners.

The work:

Our expertise with Silverlight, multi-touch Microsoft Surface technologies and Windows 7 made us the perfect choice to deliver a bespoke application that gives customers a new, interactive way to plan their journeys.

We developed a multi-touch application for Windows 7 to run on Microsoft Surface tables at Europcar stations. Customers can use the system to:

  • get local information and plan a route for their onward journey
  • print directions and maps to help them find their way
  • plan theme-based circular routes – for example, history or gastronomy – to take in local attractions
  • access special offers from Europcar partners, notably including Accor hotels


The application also provides special services dedicated to Europcar’s customers, such as practical guides explaining how to use the car or van they’ve rented.

The results:

Europcar is the first travel company in Europe to offer its customers services using Microsoft Surface tables, and the first in the world to have its own multi-touch application for Windows 7 – planned and developed by Fortune Cookie. Thanks to this cutting-edge technology, Europcar has positioned itself as a pioneer in the next generation of technological experience.

The application won the 'Innovation in User Experience' award in the 2010 Econsultancy Innovation Awards.
